Johnson Carpet Cleaning / Clean or replace carpet
Is carpet cleaning worth it, or should I replace my carpet?
If the carpet is not torn, worn through or soaked from a flood, a deep cleaning is usually worth trying before you pay to replace it. Dirt, stains and pet odor are cleaning problems. Holes, bald traffic lanes and wet, moldy pad are replacement problems. Customers have had Jan clean carpets they expected to replace.
When is a cleaning enough?
- Gray or dark traffic lanes in hallways and doorways
- Spills and set-in stains
- Pet odor in a few spots
- Carpet that has gone years without a cleaning
- Light-colored carpet that shows every mark
When should carpet be replaced?
- The fibers are worn down to the backing
- Large tears or holes that a repair cannot hide
- A flood or leak soaked the carpet and pad and they stayed wet
- You simply want a new color or style
Can carpet be too dirty to clean?
Rarely. Jan wants the worst jobs, and there is no judgment when you call. One customer wrote that their carpets had gone more than 20 years without a cleaning, and Jan made them look like new carpet again. If he thinks cleaning will not fix it, he will tell you.
Is 20-year-old carpet unhealthy?
Age alone does not make carpet unhealthy. What builds up in it matters more: dust, dirt, pet dander and old spills. Regular vacuuming and a deep cleaning remove much of that. Carpet that smells musty or has had water damage should be looked at, since moisture is what lets mold and mildew grow.
What about mold or mildew in carpet?
Mold almost always follows water: a leak, a flood, or carpet that stayed wet for days. Fix the water source first. A musty smell from a short-lived spill is different from carpet and pad that sat soaked. Jan offers three sanitizer levels, including one for mold and mildew. Describe what happened and he will tell you whether cleaning makes sense.
Can a repair save the carpet?
Often. Ripples can be stretched out, and damaged spots can be repaired. One landlord had Jan fix doorways that tenant dogs had clawed up. See carpet stretching and repair.
Why try cleaning first?
Replacing carpet means paying for new carpet, new pad and installation. A cleaning costs far less, and if it works you keep the carpet you have. The estimate is free, so it costs nothing to ask.
