Is professional tile and grout cleaning worth it?
Usually, yes, if your grout has turned darker than it started, mopping no longer makes the floor look clean, or the tile holds a smell. Grout is porous, so dirt and spills soak in where a mop cannot reach. Scrubbing the tile and grout with a machine and lifting the loosened dirt out gets to it. Why does mopping make grout darker?
A mop picks up dirt and then spreads dirty water across the floor. Grout lines sit lower than the tile, so the dirty water settles into them and dries there. Over months the grout turns gray or brown even though the floor gets mopped every week.

What is the best way to clean grout at home?
- Sweep or vacuum first so grit does not grind into the grout
- Use a mild cleaner and a soft brush on the grout lines
- Rinse with clean water, not the same mop water
- Wipe up spills quickly, before they soak in
Does vinegar damage tile or grout?
Vinegar is an acid. It can etch natural stone such as marble and travertine, and used over and over it can wear down grout and any sealer on it. If you are not sure what your tile is, ask Jan what to use and what to avoid.
